The CDC estimates that healthcare workers sustain nearly 600,000 percutaneous injuries per year1, exposing healthcare professionals, as well as patients, to bloodborne pathogens and potentially infectious materials (i.e. HIV, HBV and HCV).
To curtail exposure risk, OSHA has set forth standards and requirements for worksite exposure control plans which include work practices that incorporate engineered sharps injury prevention (ESIP) devices for employers of workers exposed to potentially infectious materials.
The American College of Surgeons2 recommends ESIPs in combination with a hands-free pick-up and release technique that incorporates a designated sharps neutral zone (i.e. magnetic drape, transfer tray) as an adjunctive measure to reduce surgical sharps injuries.
Research shows that the use of a hands-free technique (HFT) can reduce sharps injuries by up to 59%.3
Appropriately, Xodus Medical features a variety of single-use and reusable sharps transfer solutions in magnetic and non-magnetic form to facilitate the handsfree passing of needles, syringes and scalpels.
